Turkish-British relations discussed at London Yunus Emre Institute

The program, which discussed the cultural traces left by Turks in England throughout history, was held at the London Yunus Emre Institute. The program discussed the history of bilateral relations.

On the evening of October 3, 2024, Yunus Emre Institute London proudly hosted an engaging book signing and talk with historian, Dr Yasin Cemal Galata. The event marked the official launch of Dr Galata's new book, Turkish Traces in the UK, a compelling exploration of the historical Turkish presence across the United Kingdom.  Dr Galata began his talk by addressing the deep-rooted origins of British-Turkish relations, providing a historical backdrop that captivated the audience from the outset. Among the fascinating highlights of his presentation was the story of the Turkish sailors memorialized in Portsmouth, where a crescent and star monument stands. He elaborated on their journey to the UK, as well as the significance of the Turkish air force martyrs buried there, a poignant detail given that Türkiye remained neutral during much of World War II.  In a surprising twist, Dr Galata shared the little-known history of the Fordingbridge Turks football team. Despite the common belief that Beşiktaş was the first Turkish football club, this British-based team’s story came as a revelation to many. Additionally, he presented a visually engaging account of the origins of the famed "Turk's Head" pubs, explaining the establishment and evolution of these iconic British landmarks.  Dr Galata emphasized that the purpose of his research and the writing of Turkish Traces in the UK was to scientifically explore and document Turkish influences in Britain, moving beyond folklore and anecdotal stories to uncover the real historical connections between the two nations. His talk highlighted not only the arrival of Turks in the UK but also the enduring cultural traces they left behind.  Dr Galata expressed his gratitude to several people for their significant contribution to his work, including Attila Bacaoglu from the Turkish World Platform in the UK, journalist Mustafa Koker, and representatives from the Turkish World Research Foundation.    Following the talk, attendees had the opportunity to purchase the book and participate in a book signing session with Dr Galata. The evening concluded on a high note, with many attendees expressing their appreciation for the enlightening presentation and the chance to delve deeper into a previously overlooked aspect of British history.
