EU welcomes Armenia-Türkiye talks on restoring rail connectivity

'Sustained momentum in Armenia-Türkiye normalization process reflects broader positive dynamics taking hold in region,' European bloc says
The EU on Wednesday welcomed a recent meeting between Armenia and Türkiye focused on advancing efforts to restore rail connectivity between the two countries. In a statement, the EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas' office said it "welcomes" the meeting of the Armenia-Türkiye bilateral working group held in Kars, northeastern Türkiye, to discuss progress on re-establishing rail links. "The sustained momentum in the Armenia-Türkiye normalization process reflects the broader positive dynamics taking hold in the region – essential for lasting peace and stability. The EU encourages the full normalisation between both countries," the statement said. The EU noted that once operational, the Kars-Gyumri rail line would enhance regional connectivity and provide "concrete gains" for populations across the South Caucasus. Reaffirming its engagement in the region, the EU said it remains committed to strengthening connectivity through its Cross Regional Connectivity Agenda, the Global Gateway strategy and the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, with both Armenia and Türkiye described as key partners in these efforts.
